Maternity Clothes: What to buy or not buy?

Last updated on March 4th, 2024 at 10:18 pm

Have you heard of the online retailer shop called Boohoo? Well, you are missing out if you haven’t. It’s a great shop for trendy clothes for both men and women. It’s been a firm favorite of mine for years since I moved to the UK. Now, that it’s time to be thinking about buying maternity clothes what better store to rely on. I don’t like to spend a fortune on maternity clothes because I only wear them for a few months. Boohoo has great bargains and even more of sales hitting their online shop this Friday for Black Friday so keep an eye out this weekend.

I have a small group of pregnant moms I am sharing this baby journey along side and one asked what I was going to buy for maternity wear and what bits and bobs does she really not need as it’s her first baby?

This is my third baby so I am not going to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe. There are a few staple items you need to stay comfortable and the rest you can get away with what you got or normal clothes that you can wear afterwards. Stick to the bare essentials when shopping.

WHAT TO BUY:

Jeans/Pants: Get a blue pair jeans and a black pair of pants and a pair of leggings to swap in between. You don’t need any more than this. Most of the time regular leggings are fine until the very end you don’t need specific maternity type leggings.

A few lose tops or t-shirts but you can just buy one size bigger than you normally wear, they don’t have to be from the maternity section. I like to buy at least two maternity tops and two maternity sweaters for the end when I am really big and can’t stretch my normal tops and sweaters out over my bump.

If you wear heels a lot like I do, than invest in some pumps or trainers that are fun and trendy but keep you in comfort and that back not hurting.

A good bra as you grow, I buy breastfeeding ones while pregnant so I can use them after saves me buying maternity ones than breastfeeding ones as they are comfortable.

One comfortable dress for those dinners out, maybe a Christmas party coming up or other celebrations if you have them coming up while pregnant. I am always pregnant at Xmas time so need one for the work xmas party and always recycle for New Years too.  Keep it solid color and plain so you can dress it up or down and get plenty of use out of it. No need to buy a few you won’t be in them long.

My one treat to myself is some fun pregnancy pjs even though most of my pjs fit me through out as I like baggy, comfy pjs, I like a new set to wear and them have for the hospital when I give birth. I always get them in the sale so it doesn’t matter if they get ruined in the end.

WHAT NOT TO BUY:

You don’t need a lot of each items and you don’t need to break the bank. They just get taken to charity after baby is born so try to get the essentials down. You can still look trendy and cute with some alterations to your current wardrobe too.

MATERNITY WEAR TIPS:

If you love your skinny jeans use a hairband / bobble around the button and threw the loop so you can wear them longer. I get at least two more months out of mine like this before I need maternity pants.

If you have a lot of cropped or shorter tops you love to wear, wear a long tank top underneath for a layered look. This style works amazing for breastfeeding when baby arrives too. You pull top up and tank top down and  you are completely feeding incognito.

  1. I’ve ended up buying more maternity clothes than I’d planned but have managed to get some good deals so I haven’t spent a lot. This is our first baby too and we hope to have more so I’ll be vacuum packing all of my maternity clothes and storing them in the loft afterwards too! x #Bumps&Babies

    • What a great idea. I never had any before but I am stocking up nicely my last time. I already have so many to hand them off to after I am done too. I love giving forward!!!

  2. I was just talking about this with a friend at work. Her daughter is pregnant and needs a winter coat. She had to find one that would expand to fit her belly. She did not want to buy a maternity coat as this is her last baby. Thankfully she found one!

    • Oh I need an expandable one too that’s a great idea. I did see a few options that had a panel you can add and take out afterwards. Definitely one to check out. Thanks.

  3. I ended up getting a lot more maternity clothing this time, than both of my previous pregnancies put together! I had a bump from so early on, and none of my normal clothes fit haha. I’m gutted I didn’t find BooHoo maternity earlier, I’ve spotted some lovely bits xx
