First Impressions of the Sony Xperia XZ1

Sony Xperia Z1 handset mobile new features motion eye and autofocus

Have you seen the new Sony Xperia XZ1? It’s a high-end Android smartphone produced by Sony. My first impressions is that it’s going to be a blogger/vlogger dream in terms of photos and videos with it’s new features.

Life is busy with kids, work, house work, and general day to day routines. We don’t often have time to get those big dslr cameras out anymore nor the warning if it’s something happening spur of the moment like your child’s first steps. We rely on our mobile phones more than ever before now for photos and videos not just to text and call family and friends.

Each year, the mobile phones come out with more features, added bonuses to make our lives easier in capturing those precious moments or those funny happenings that you wouldn’t have time to pull out your camera for. As a parent and a blogger, I find I am still restricted or struggle with certain things that keep me from getting those perfect captures or video clips every time.

If you ever have taken photos of your whole family together you will know it’s a nightmare trying to get all the kids and dad too to look at the camera, smile at the same time, and do it all at the same time together.

  • The Motion Eye™ camera with Predictive Capture starts buffering images one second before you press the shutter button. It’s like rewinding time, and it gives you up to four images to pick from.

Or perhaps you want to capture those puddle jumping moments with the kids but have to rely on video editing software to really slow it down and get that slow motion effect.

  • The Motion Eye™ camera is unique: it records 960 frames per second, for Super slow motion playback. The footage is four times slower than videos from other smartphones

One of my many frustrations is that my kids move very fast and when it’s a moment you want to capture like my son at sports day at school, my daughter twirling in a tutu or both of them dancing together around the kitchen on disco nights (yes we have those in our house) I always get blurry hands or blurry faces when I am using a mobile.

  • The Autofocus burst feature tracks and captures sequences of moving objects in sharp focus, so there’ll be no more blurred action shots.

In the last year, we have really started to do family videos more as the kids get older we want to share our family days out, our adventures to look back on in the future. They are at that funny stage where they say silly things, doing cute things, and love talking to the camera. As a vlogger, I don’t always have the option to set up a tripod to record us together especially when we are on holiday. People that vlog or take family videos will know that walking with your mobile gets very shaking and bouncy as you try to chase after your family to capture them. Or worse trying to hold it to record all of you while walking and talking to your video.

  • The SteadyShot™ feature, with 5-axis image stabilisation, compensates for shaking movements in five different directions, so your videos end up clear and smooth.

These are just four issues I run into on a daily basis when I am using my mobile for photos and videos. But clearly Sony has been paying attention to what we need out of our phones with these key features in mind. These are just my first impressions of what it has to offer. I can’t wait to start putting it to use and see what kind of photos and videos I will create using these new features.

The sleek design and modern large screen of it’s appearance just add to the initial love when I opened the box. It’s lightweight is always a must. I found linking it with my google account was super easy and all my photos go straight to my account folders. As I look around at apps and features my first thoughts are positive ones. They come in other color options too.

What will I be left with to be frustrated about?

You can immediately see how crystal clear without editing the photos are here. This photo of my two was taken at 5:00pm getting dark, in my dark house, and still looks nice, bright and clear.

  1. I don’t use my phone at all for photos or video precisely because of the points you mention and I take my big camera with me EVERYWHERE as a result, even though sometimes it would be easier to leave it at home. If this phone really can deliver what it promises (the sharp action shots and the stabilisation of videos in particular) then I’d seriously consider it when I upgrade next Spring. Looking forward to seeing what you create!

  2. It looks amazing!!! I’m such an Apple aficionado and have had an iPhone since they first came out but I’m always interested in what other brands have to offer. I had a Sony camera and loved it so I can imagine the picture quality on this is fab! Can’t wait to see what you do with it xx
