I loved the 4th of July growing up in America. Now, living in the UK and raising 3 kids that are equal parts American as they are English and Irish we try to still celebrate all the major holidays from all three countries. This is what happens when an American marries an English man with an Irish mom. So we are grateful to have a lot to celebrate throughout the year. One of my favorite holidays to share with my kids is Independence Day.
We may not be able to give them a proper 4th of July here in the UK with city parades and big community firework displays but we have made a few little traditions that make it special. From big bbqs with friends to share all our favorite bbq recipes to making red, white and blue recipes galore. We still decorate the whole house and put out our big American flag on the driveway to share our celebrations with the whole neighbourhood.
For the last couple of years we have been making various chocolate bark for every special occasion. You can see our Valentine’s Day one here with yummy Haribos. We came upon the Chunky Chef a few years ago and thought we would try her bark recipes too. It spurred us on to make our own version for 4th of July and share with you all here.

4th of July Chocolate Bark Recipe
A quick and easy treat for Independence Day!
Ingredients
- 375 g Wilton Candy Melts WHITE
- 125 g Wilton Candy Melts BLUE
- 125 g Wilton Candy Melts RED
- 3 cookies Oreos, crushed
- 40 g Red, White and Blue Sprinkles with Stars
Instructions
-
Line a deep cookie sheet with parchment paper
-
Pour each color of melts into their own plastic measuring jug, three jugs in total. (You can use a double broiler pot to melt your candy melts too).
-
Place your plastic jugs in microwave and set to five minutes, STOP each minute and give it a good stir with your spatula until all candy melts are fully melted, for each color .
-
Pour white melted candy melts into the lined pan and spread evenly with a spatula.
-
Using the red and blue melted candy melts, make long lines up and down of each color, then use a butter knife or handle of a spoon to swirl in figure 8s into the red and blue to mix colors slightly but not fully. (see video).
-
Sprinkle on to any sprinkles of red, blue and white you may have. We used some m&ms, stars, and round sprinkles.
-
Crush your Oreos in a small bag and add a handful on top.(You may need to slightly press down on Oreo pieces to ensure they stick).
-
Place cookie pan in the fridge for a few hours so the chocolate bark hardens.
-
Once set, use a knife and push the tip into the harden bark and it will crack into pieces.
-
Store in the fridge, eat within a few days.

The kids loved these 4th of July chocolate bark treats so much, we definitely will me making more for Halloween and Christmas. They would make the best presents for the holidays and they are so easy to make. I am a sucker for any recipe that is quick and easy and that I can get the kids involved in too.
