Capturing childhood memories for my children

My family is growing and with it the amount of memories we make together. Our memories can only hold a certain amount of detail and milestones of life. One of my biggest new year’s resolutions is to capture childhood memories for my children rather than just for myself.

I have always been really good at documenting the big milestones in our lives (well, I hope so it’s my career after all) but it was always focused from the point of view that they were being documented for me. Memories captured and written about so I didn’t forget. Ones I could look back on one day and recall the fun and adventures we went on when my own memory starts to say it’s full and begins to loose the smaller memories to time. 

With my children’s childhoods in mind, I think I will capture them differently now. I want to document more of the little moments they have together as siblings. Capture the childhood moments like riding a bike, helping each other build dens in the living room or together teaching their baby brother how to crawl or talk. Each year I want to print out albums together as a family, month by month not by vacation or celebrations like we have done in the past. I want to see where we were and what we were up to throughout the year when it might just be a rain day family game night.

The kids keep looking back over them and sharing the stories of where we were and what we were doing to baby boy too. It not only showcases what countries we have traveled and the fun adventures we have experienced together but random acts of fun in our backyard, in our home, and outside at our local parks. As we poured over them when they arrived so many small details of our memories came flooding back. Those details that go unnoticed or forgotten in a few days or even seconds after they happen if we haven’t captured them. 

They are gorgeous flat lay, matte, landscape albums that will stand the test of tiny little hands opening and closing them. As you can see, so easy for them to share across their laps and baby boy to look at them while he is learning to sit up. I love them stacked nicely on our coffee table together for guests to grab and peak through. I haven’t been very good at updating photos on the wall so it’s nice to have these to share with family and friends. 

I am not one to put a big list of new year’s resolutions down on paper and try to stick to them. We all know how that goes by February/March the gym is empty. But this year, giving a little more focus on how I document my children’s life and keep track of their memories for the three of them is on my mind. Having grown up with no videos or photos of myself when I was little, I am motivated to make sure my children have enough to share between them.
