I have now had the experience of breastfeeding all three of my children. While it’s the hardest job as a mom when you are tired and your body has just given birth to go through all the challenges that breastfeeding sometimes can bring. Trust me, I have had my fair share of those in my three experiences. It is also the most rewarding to bond with your baby and provide for your baby in such a natural way if you can. It does mean that you are your baby’s food source for as long as you want it to be but that’s where expressing comes in. Being able to express in between feeds allows me to stock up on milk in the freezer for those days that I might have a work meeting outside the house, an event to attend to, or I just need those highlights done without baby attached to my boob in the process. It also is great to have some stocked up if his siblings want to feed him or Daddy want to join in on the bonding while feeding process.

I have been milking it with my Medela Swing Maxi Double electric breast pump. In the past, I had the single one which was great but now I can pump twice the amount in less time. After all those feeds already the last thing I want to do is be sat there pumping in between feeding longer than necessary.

What I love about this breast pump is that it is more gentle and has different levels of pulses so if one is too strong or not strong enough you can adjust it to you. Everyone is different and everyone’s milk comes out at different speeds or needs different stimulation. This has all been clearly considered when designing the Swing pump.

With my first born, I used a hand pump. It left my hand aching from pumping for so long and my breast sore as I couldn’t mimic my baby’s rhythm of sucking so clearly I was doing it too hard, too long in the end. I soon learned my ways when I had my daughter.

Breastfeeding doesn’t have to tie you to the sofa all day and all night nor does it have to be just you feeding your baby. Getting into a little expressing routine so that others can help feed your baby or babysit while you get some alone time or just time to run errands and do something for yourself is important. You can share those feeds with the family.

The Medela Swing Maxi Double electric pump comes with Calma bottles. These are amazing they were designed so your baby can drink in a natural rhythm where your baby has to create a vacuum like they would when breastfeeding to start the milk flow. It helps transition from breast to bottle to breast again. I love that you can just pump your milk right into the bottle base and put a lid on it in the freezer or fridge. Then when you need it just pop the Calma bottle nipple on top ready to feed baby.

Don’t forget to stock up on Breast Milk Storage Bags and grab yourself some Quick Clean microwave bags too. Always make sure you label the date on your milk storage bags and definitely clean and sterilize your breast pump pieces after using them.

I like to enjoy a nice cuppa and read or catch up with my favorite show while I express. Just take a little me time while baby is napping and I can store up some milk for him in the process. With a busy work schedule, a newborn baby, and two older ones in so many after school activities it’s nice to have this little 20 minutes to myself each day.

It’s as easy as pump, freeze, thaw, feed. I also think it helps when you can pass off the feeding for a feed or two if you need and give yourself a break, give baby time to bond with another family member and possibly catch a nap while you get a free pass for that feed. I know a lot of my friend’s pump and have their hubby do the 10/11pm feed so they can get a long solid sleep more than 2/3 hour nap sessions between feeds throughout the rest of the night.

So with the Medela Swing Maxi breast pump you can the advantage of more milk with higher energy content compared to a single pump, simple and comfortable: easy-to-use pump interface with four buttons, which is small and portable, double pumping with 2-Phase Expression technology: shown to express on average 18 per cent more milk, and best of all it saves up to two hours per day when frequently pumping. These are stats that make a difference in your already hectic, busy life of a parent to a newborn.

Have you ever used a Medela breast pump, what did you think? If not, have you ever used an electric breast pump compared to a hand one? What was your verdict? Let’s talk milk here…comment below.
