White Chocolate Pumpkin Spice Cinnamon Swirl with some white chocolate chips

I have been making cinnamon swirls for years. Your plain ordinary cinnamon swirls. Yup, the ones that taste so good with a hot cuppa you can resist just one more after all they are only small. I decided this year I would give it a little spin on the old recipe and see how it turned out by adding white chocolate chips to them. I only came upon this idea since I had some white chocolate chips in the house. It’s funny how that’s how a recipe forms with what’s leftover in the cupboard. But when I went to get my cinnamon out I realized I only had pumpkin pie spice left. Well, Thanksgiving is just around the corner so I wondered why not try pumpkin pie spice instead of just plain cinnamon. For those don’t know what pumpkin pie spice is a mixture of spices: Cinnamon, Ginger, Nutmeg, Allspice. You can buy it premade or make it yourself. So it was a day of risks and firsts with my cinnamon swirls.

Cinnamon Swirls Made Easy

I find that the secret to perfect cinnamon swirls is to use a pre-made puff pastry sheet. There is no need to spend your time fiddling around to make puff pastry – this isn’t Bake Off! Save yourself a lot of effort and buy the pre-made puff pastry sheets from the supermarket and you’ll have perfect cinnamon swirls every time.

  3. Mix together sugars, butter, spice in a medium bowl
  4. Spread evenly over puff pastry sheet
  5. Sprinkle white chocolate chips on top
  6. Roll long side inwards to create a long roll
  7. Cut small slices and lay cut side down on a greased cookie sheet
  8. Beat your egg in a small dish and glaze the edges of your swirls

Recipe Notes

Oven times may vary. Watch very close to not over bake you just want them golden. Baking time will depend on how thin or thick you cut your slices.

Adding White Chocolate To Puff Pastry Cinnamon Rolls

I am no professional chef but these bad boys although a little over baked as my toddler was having a melt down and I may have forgotten to set the timer turned out delicious. The white chocolate melted right into the pastry crust and the flavors from the pumpkin pie spice was enough to make me never bake a plain cinnamon swirl again. Even though they were slightly over baked the puff pastry flaked beautifully in your mouth and the crusted pumpkin pie spice on the edges was like eating caramel. You must try these out for the festive season. The whole family is sure to love them and so will your guests. Why not pin it for later, just hover your mouse over a photo and the pin it button will appear.

Pumpkin Spice Cinnamon Swirl Icing

Because of the addition of white chocolate to these cinnamon swirls I don’t really find that they need the icing drizzled over the top that you would usually have with a cinnamon roll. They already have enough sweetness to cut through the spice. However, if you are all about the icing then it is really simple to make. A ratio of 2tbsp of icing sure to 1tbsp of water then mixed until it’s smooth. You can make as much or as little as you like depending on how sweet you want the cinnamon rolls to be.

Wait until your white chocolate cinnamon swirls have cooled before icing them. Use a spoon to drizzle icing back and forth diagonally on the swirls. The icing should be thick enough to hold it’s shape slightly on the swirls.

As with all my recipes, they are always fast, and easy to make. If I can do it so can you. Just don’t forget to set that timer and possibly don’t do it while entertaining toddlers. It’s always a sure fire way to over bake something. Try these with your next coffee or tea or even some hot chocolate to warm the bones on a cold winter’s day.
