Can I Use Fresh Pumpkin Instead Of Canned?
It happens every year. We see the pumpkins in the store and think we’ll get one, and then have no idea what to use it for as so many pumpkin recipes call for canned pumpkin – not fresh. That’s no problem though, you can prepare your own pumpkin puree at home but roasting the pumpkin flesh (in the same way you would with a butternut squash) for around 1-1.5 hours and then blitzing it in a blender to make a creamy puree. You can then replace this in a recipe for canned pumpkin. Don’t forget to keep the seeds for roasting, the recipe is below!
Where a recipe calls for 1 cup canned pumpkin simply add 1 cup of your homemade pumpkin puree.
Can You Freeze Pumpkin?
If you have too much pumpkin than your recipe calls for then you can freeze it, either raw or prepared. It will store in the freezer for around 3 months. Try and store it in the portion sizes for your favourite pumpkin recipes so each time you can just grab the right amount and get cooking.
