Our first family snow day

Our first family snow day

Last weekend marked the first family snow day for us. It was a big deal as MM has never been in the snow. Mr P and I were like two little kids impatiently willing the snow to fall harder, bigger, softer, and stick. It started falling on the Saturday so we took a little family walk in it. MM’s first impressions of snow falling from the sky couldn’t have been farther from magical and joy. If you follow me on instagram you can see her desperately screaming for the snow to in fact, stop falling on her and her sad face, see it again here. When we woke up on Sunday and saw snow still on the ground, we were a little apprehensive on how our first family snow day would go that day.

We had bought sleds years ago when B was little, praying it would snow for some family fun but it never did and we were excited to finally put them to use. We bundled up warm as we could and prepared for a sledding day. We kept telling MM snow is soft, and fun to play with. It took some convincing but we put her in one sled and B in another and set off for the big hills behind our house. They were instantly squealing with laughter on their first sleigh ride. Mr P and I were throwing snowballs like two little kids.  It was looking good for a snow day for us. Our first family snow dayOur first family snow day

As you can see as long as they were happily out of the snow and being pulled on their sleds their were laughing. I had this silly thought that I would capture my family photo for this month in the beautiful snow, all together as it was a big milestone but the kids/hubby had other ideas. When it came time to take any photo with me, hubby included there was an uproar and protests. One photo attempt even saw me get white washed (face down) in the snow by my lovely son, B. It’s a prime example of #lifeasablogger failed! I still haven’t had the chance to take a nice one as both kids are now sick. You can see MM’s face says it all below that I am clearly ruining snow day for them all. So we headed back for some more sledding on the hill. Our first family snow dayOur first family snow dayOur first family snow dayOur first family snow day

Daddy’s strength was put to the test pulling these two monkeys up and down the steep hill. But I said it was good for him and used the fact that I wanted to capture the moment. Our sledding didn’t last long at the top of the hill as it was absolutely blowing a gail. You could barely stand up without being forced in one direction or another. I stupidly thought I would attempted one more family capture at the top looking over all the snowy fields and as the tripod blew over it snapped this one below.  It was almost sideways before it clicked and made me laugh however no one else thought it was funny.

We made our way back down the hill after Daddy tried to sled down the biggest part of the hill and hit a four foot drop off and broke the sled. He is a total kid when it comes to snow. The wind really started to burn our faces and kids were getting cold and fussy. It was time to go home. Snow days never last that long when you have little ones. Our first family snow dayOur first family snow day

We walked back home with the snow rapidly melting behind us and memories of our first family snow day together. Things may have not gone as smoothly as I envisioned they rarely do but we had a lovely snowy Sunday morning. I was really impressed with how much B liked sledding and the snow too. He even stayed out longer to play with his best friend next door in the snow some more. I may not like living in the snow but I love playing in it when it falls. I hope we get some more fluffy white snow before winter is over because I am sick of the rain all year, it’s boring and you can only jump in so many muddy puddles.

  1. One of the negatives of living so far south is that we don’t often get snow – last weekend we had the mildest of dustings which disappeared in minutes. Your two look like they had a blast though – beautiful photos! x

    • Oh yes I grew up where there was months and months of five feet of snow so I know what it’s like to live in it day to day. Awful. However one or two days of fluffy white magic I could live with. lol

  2. Ah, it looks like you had a great time. We had snow in Yorkshire too but like yourselves it wasn’t much. I’m glad MM liked it in the end. Fab photos! It’s lovely to cherish days and moments like this xxx

    • They had fun although it didn’t last long after Daddy broke sled and MM fell in the snow and both kids got cold quick. But their first experience will be remembered for sure. lol

  4. Oh this looks like such fun! I have very happy memories of snow fun days when I was young. The boys are desperate for snow but looks like we’ve missed out again this year.

    • Oh me too as we would get tons and tons of it every year for months on end. I have a lovely snow childhood memory. I only wish we got a little bit more here for the kids to play in.

  5. How lovely! We’ve only had one day of snow so far over here in South Derbyshire in the UK – my little one is only three months old so we’re not quite at the playing out stage yet, but I’m looking forward to being able to have days like you’ve just described. Joining up with ‘Share with Me’ for the first time (fairly new to blogging) – thanks for hosting such a lovely linky 🙂

    • Welcome to blogging and share with me lovely. So glad you found my blog hop. It’s a great place to get to know other blogs and bloggers. Oh yes it’s taken three years to see snow for us so we could have a day like this. Hahaha only lasted the morning and had all melted by lunch time sadly. But we enjoy it while we could. Thanks.

    • Thanks Becky minus our cold, wet attempt at a family capture hahahah It is weird we only get snow like once every five years here and for a day that’s it and it’s gone again. This lasted until noon. lol

  6. Oh this looks so lovely! Little Lady was very little when she first experienced snow, so I doubt she hardly remembers it. This weekend, however, was epic because we got a full-blown blizzard. Almost 2 ft fell on us in 24 hours and though it was cold and windy, when it was over, we played every little bit in it. It was great and she loved every bit of it. Glad MM finally experienced her first now, and your family had such a wonderful time. Thanks for sharing your captures on #sharewithme this week! Have a great rest of your week 🙂

  7. Looking out on a dull rainy day here in Cornwall I couldn’t agree with you more. Love your sledging photos and every sympathy for trying to get one of you all together, I never manage it. We still haven’t had any snow so I am very envious of yours. Please #Share withme on #CountryKids too, perfect outdoor fun!

    • Big shame I thought it would be so nice to recall our snowy adventures. In hindsight I should have taken fam photos before playing hours in the cold snow and waiting until they are tired. lol

    • It is a true magical smile they have isn’t it when they see it covering the ground. I have to say I get a little excited as it never last more than a day here.

  10. They both looked like they had the best times of their lives… my kids are the same, they kept waiting for snow, unfortunately when we had snow here in Scotland, we were away for a holiday and when we return this week, it starts to get mild again. Hope there will be more to come before winter finishes. Lovely post and beautiful photos too! #sharewithme

  11. Well you might not have got the photos to show it all but I’m glad you all had fun in the end! Toby saw his first snow the weekend before last too. He only went and played in the garden and it had gone by tea time but he had such a great time. I’m hoping like you though that we get some more snow before the winter is over.

  12. Sounds lovely – glad MM came round! My two still haven’t seen snow. We live in south & on coast, so snow is not very common. Makes me sad as I love snow & I’m from the North, where we always had more. #sharewithme

  15. Aww some lovely photos even though the day wasn’t exactly what you’d hoped for! We had a day of snow too and it was Lizzy’s first experience of snow as well, we had a little play out in my parents’ back garden, it was so lovely seeing her reaction to it, she’s such a cautious child so she wasn’t rolling around in it but she still loved stomping around! Xx

  16. Awe what a fun snow day! I’m sorry it didn’t turn out quite like you had hoped, but it still looks like special family day together. I hope we both see snow before winter is over. It has been unseasonably warm where we live. All of our plants are confused and I could really go for some sledding with the kids!
