Sister, don’t cry!

I have long waited for Buba to finally recognize that there is another child in the house. It took him months to even acknowledge that he had a sister. Many days he would play next to her bassinet and glance her way once or twice but he didn’t really take notice until now. She was just this doll Mommy and Daddy were playing with at first, but when she started getting her own personality and mobility, he soon realized, “wait, who is this?” Since it took so long for him to figure it out, I thought jealousy would soon set in.

Now that Missy Moo can reach up for us, and make giggling, fun noises, I was worried, would he think all our attention was on her? The complete opposite happened, she is his new best friend. Now he wants to be next to her, playing with her, and hugging her, twenty-four seven. He wants her to learn to crawl so she will follow him around the house. The phrases, “Come on Missy Moo,” and “this way Missy Moo,” are all too common.

The one that makes me most happy is the protectiveness he shows for his baby sister. Everyone should have a protective brother/sister in their life, it’s the best feeling in the world. I was lucky because I had both. Missy Moo isn’t one to cry very often but when she does it’s the saddest thing you have ever seen. She is all drama, from her perfectly full tears and those pouty lips turned inside out. It may not always work on Momma but it definitely works on Buba. He will race to her aid, hug her, kiss her, tell her, “Don’t cry, Missy Moo” and “You’re ok”. He will sit with her until she does stop crying or yell at me to do something about it. You can tell he truly feels her pain.

This week we have been full of colds and snotty noses, so there were plenty of tears to go around. With temperatures high, Missy Moo was a bit fed up with it all. Even though Buba wasn’t feeling right in himself, he was there cuddling on the couch with us, smiling at her, and trying to make it all right. He was saying “Missy Moo, I am here.” Words he must have heard me say and repeated. It was a magical moment to capture Buba trying so hard to comfort his devastated sister.

I am ever so lucky to have such an endearing little boy and a lovely little girl, who’s world not only lights up for Mommy and Daddy but it lights up for her big brother too. They are each others shining light. I could not have asked for more.

  1. What beautiful pictures of them together and how protective he is of her! As she gets older she’ll discover how amazing it is to have a big brother (says me from experience!)

    • Thanks Kriss, I hope you are right. I was the same, at my brother’s hips growing up, teenage years at his throat, and then as adults we are closer than ever. I loved having a big brother!!! I hope she does too. So far so good. 😉 Thanks again for coming back and visiting.
